How can I motivate my staff?

Think of motivation not as something that you do to people, rather that they will produce in themselves, providing that you create the right conditions.

Everyone is different, but there are some aspects of work that we commonly agree will act as motivators. Which are most important for the individuals that you manage? Well - you need to talk to them - discuss how you work together - you may be surprised! (Of course you may find this difficult - talk to us, we can help you with it)

So what things in the workplace generally act as motivators for people?
(Not necessarily in order)

  • Reward linked to good performance
  • Having control over how work is done
  • Recognition for good performance
  • Authority over the use of resources necessary to do the job
  • Opportunities to do the type of work they have trained for
  • Understanding the underlying purpose of what they do

And what things get in the way of motivation?

  • Managers saying something will happen, which then doesn't
  • Lack of distinctlive recognition or reward for high effort
  • Managers constantly making small decisions
  • Managers making inconsistent decisions
