How can we translate Vision and Goals into Strategy?

Strategy is a description of the broad actions you will take in order to achieve your goals. Organisations these days set challenging goals and have ambitios visions for change. Staff are often willing to share in these, but fail to understand what they need to do in order to realise them.

So what do we do about it?

  • The most important exercise a senior team must undertake is to analyse all of the tasks and opportunities facing the organisation. They must prioritise them according to the value or progress each will create.
  • Secondly, the team must create a plan, usually straddling several years, for when each activity must be tackled, realistically and systematically.
  • Then the team must assign accountabilitites and responsibilities for each of these actions to key staff.
  • This is then a workable strategy. But to achieve it, the senior team must then organise so that the above staff have the opportunity and resources to succeed.
