| What is leadership?
This is a big question and we won't attempt to write an exhaustive
definition here. But it's a very important question. Organisations
are full of managers yet they are crying out for leaders (at every
level).
The big issues for leadership today:
Focus and Urgency
Directors and Senior managers should spend most of their time
tackling major issues that will protect the business and grow
it in future. Much management activity and small decisions should
be delegated. Virtually all senior people we meet agree with this
but very few are able to do it. Sounds familiar? We can help!
Vision
Leaders define and communicate a clear and understandable picture
of the achievable future. Have you? What we tend to do is ask
the people who work for you!
Commitment
The essence of what leaders achieve is to generate enthusiasm
and commitment in others. People have as much as 70% of their
potential (yes, 70%) as 'discretionary' - they fulfil their contracts
but, if you don't lead them properly, they hold vital things back.
We can help you release them.
Unity
Conflict amongst the senior people in an organisation is almost
the norm. You would be in the majority if there is conflict and
disunity between you and your fellow managers. You probably don't
realise how destructive it is and you must, must stamp it out.
We can help you.
So what does someone do, which leads to them being perceived as
a leader?
- Establishes and communicates clear goals for the future
- Identifies how things need to change
- Sets an example of total enthusiasm for goals, a positive attitude,
determination and confidence
- Encourages people to use their own talents to the full, in achieving
goals
- Challenges ineffective behaviours
- Challenges the limits of what's said can be achieved
Note that their is a big difference between someone who is appointed
a leader, and actually being perceived as such!
